A Journey Across the Mediterranean

When it comes to exploring multiple destinations with ease, cruising is one of the most convenient and exciting ways to travel. This past September I embarked on an unforgettable journey aboard the Carnival Legend cruising through the beautiful Mediterranean. From sunny warm days to experiencing the region’s culture and history, it was truly a trip to remember.
Our Itinerary
The cruise departed from Rome (Civitavecchia) in the evening and we spent the next two days at sea before arriving at our first port. Here’s a quick rundown of the itinerary:
- Day 1: Rome (Civitavecchia) | Departure at 7:00 PM
- Days 2-3: Fun Days at Sea
- Day 4: Kusadasi (Ephesus) Turkey | 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM
- Day 5: Mykonos | 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM
- Day 6: Santorini | 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
- Day 7: Athens | 6:00 AM – 5:00 PM
- Day 8: Katakolon | 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
- Day 9: Messina (Sicily) | 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM
- Day 10: Naples (Capri & Pompeii) | 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM
- Day 11: Rome (Civitavecchia) | Arrival at 6:00 AM

The Weather
For most of the trip we were blessed with sunny and warm weather perfect for exploring ancient ruins and relaxing on the deck. However as the cruise progressed the infamous “winter winds” arrived bringing cooler temperatures and choppy seas. These winds affected the tender boat operations in Mykonos and Santorini causing delays but it was all part of the adventure.

Pros of Cruising
- Effortless Travel Between Destinations One of the best things about cruising is the ability to visit multiple destinations without the hassle of packing and unpacking at each stop. From Turkey to Greece and Italy we woke up in a new city almost every day ready to explore.
- All-in-One Vacation A cruise combines accommodation dining and entertainment into one package. Onboard the Carnival Legend we enjoyed delicious meals, evening shows and even some poolside relaxation on sea days. It’s a stress-free way to vacation.
- Stunning Views Cruising offers unparalleled views of the sea and coastlines. Watching the sunset over the Mediterranean or spotting the white-washed buildings of Santorini from the deck is an experience like no other.

Highlights of the Ports
- Kusadasi (Ephesus): Walking through the ancient ruins of Ephesus felt like stepping back in time. The Library of Celsus was a standout sight.
- Mykonos: Despite the choppy weather we still managed to explore the charming streets and iconic windmills.
- Santorini: The caldera views were breathtaking even with the occasional pause in tender boat service.
- Athens: Visiting the Acropolis and marveling at the Parthenon was a dream come true.
- Katakolon: A gateway to Olympia the birthplace of the Olympic Games.
- Messina (Sicily): Rich history and mouthwatering cannoli made this stop unforgettable.
- Naples: From Pompeii to Capri this port offered a perfect blend of history and natural beauty.

Reflections
While the cooler weather and wind added a few challenges they didn’t dampen the overall experience. Cruising remains one of my favorite ways to travel offering a balance of relaxation, adventure and cultural immersion. If you’re considering a Mediterranean cruise September is a fantastic time to go as you’ll enjoy warm days and slightly fewer crowds compared to the peak summer months.
